Oh Jesus, I Have Promised

Over the last week my thoughts have returned over and over to last Sunday's hymn "Oh Jesus, I Have Promised". How much does that promise hold true for us as we sing such a hymn? I certainly made a promise to follow Jesus when I was a teenager, and have held on to that since, even with a few bumps and bruises along the way. It's a promise I haven't questioned...until I began to really think about it. Are we capable of holding that promise without losing our way, or are we a society that just returns to the promise when we need it? I think of other promises I have made, particularly the promises made in church - to my wife at our wedding, and to my daughter at her baptism. I will hold true to those promises, and hold those as solemn oaths, yet we live in a time when many marriage promises are broken and some people seem to change religions with their socks. My faith in God enables me to keep those promises made because they were made in the sight of God.
