Meditation

“How do I get closer to God in my everyday life?”

“Well, you have to take a little time, to listen, to see, to practice some disciplines that help you open to God”

“Practice some disciplines?

“Take time each day to listen, to be quiet, to be thankful… but make it part of your day as opposed to putting it in when you have extra time for it. You have to make time for it… make time as if it where important to you”

“It is important to me, but how can I do that? I’m too busy – I don’t have time for special time like this! I have work, then I have kids who need time, and the pet, and I have to prepare dinner, and all the other things I have to do.”

“Do these things as part of your day – like stopping at certain points in the day to pray, to remember God… to be thankful. For example, before you go to work, offer a prayer, or just sit in silence for a few minutes being with God. And before you eat lunch, offer a prayer of thanks- you’re going to eat lunch anyway right? Take some time to offer God thanks for your food. Take some time each day to do something that has no purpose, no function, except for its own sake! Take some time to look up during the day- you walk anyway right? Actually stop walking and look up. Look at the clouds, and the sky. Take this time to let your Spirit lift to God… take a deep breath, offer a prayer. Eat dinner with your family in the evening- all at the same place at the same time. If they’re not all there, do it anyway. It’ll develop the pattern. And offer a prayer as you do… and then enjoy the company and the food. And before you go to bed… you go to bed anyway right? Take some time to thank God for your good day, for the good things – and mean it. And remember, there’s no right way to be with God… whatever you do, however you do it… it’s more important that you just do something that helps you.”
