Lenten Moment

Open my eyes…
A story from Luke Chapter 24... The Road to Emmaus

Days after Jesus had been executed, a couple of his disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a village named Emmaus, just a few miles away.

As they walked,
they talked about what had recently happened regarding Jesus.

At one point, Jesus began walking with them.
                                         But they didn't recognize him.

How often we don't recognize Jesus - God - The Holy
when it sidles up next to us!
We're more preoccupied with all our own stuff!

He asked them what they were discussion.
And they stopped short...  sadness written across their faces.

     One of them said...
"You must be the only one here in Jerusalem that hasn't heard
about what's been going on these last few day!"

And they caught him up on the story;
Of how they believed Jesus to be
          a might prophet
                who did powerful miracles

And how the religious leaders made sure he was executed
And how they'd all thought...
              and hoped...
...he would have been the messiah
      come to rescue Israel....

... and that he was now dead!

All our dreams...    our vision...    our own expectations,
 our own conclusions...
...what we want to have happen,
...in the manner we want it to happen...
                              ...gone...

The story continued....

     "But just this very morning,
Some of the women of our group went to the tomb
                   and reported it empty!
They said that angels at the tomb told them Jesus was alive!"

How difficult it is to trust that the tomb is really empty!

What do we "see" when we see the empty tomb?
Fear?    That our expectations have been wasted?

Or...  a renewed knowledge that God can do a
            wonderful       new          thing
                                                from death?

At that point, Jesus began to explain how this had already been predicted in the scriptures;
     about the messiah,
       his coming        and his work,
and his suffering before entering into glory.

He took them through the scriptures, from the prophets on through,
      explaining about the messiah.

How hard it is to understand
so hard to "read" the signs...
Lord, teach us    help us to understand    open our minds and hearts

By this time they were entering Emmaus, the end of the journey.

Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they encouraged him to stay with them since it was late.  So he agreed to stay and eat with them.

As they sat down to eat, he took bread and blessed it.
Then he broke the bread and gave it to them...

      Suddenly their eyes were opened
                                         and they recognized him!

Suddenly.... all at once... they saw!

Have your eyes ever opened like that?
Opened to seeing the reality of God...     of life...     of yourself...

right there in front of you...   all along?

I wonder
what makes our eyes open like that?
