Lord, Open My
Ears
Continuing with our series – asking God to open parts of
our lives.
This week open our
ears!
Reading from Matthew – Disciples asked Jesus why he taught in
parables. He said because parables are a
way of telling something deeper. Parables
needed to be explained – and some got the explanations, while others did not. Some understood, while others did not.
But here’s the part that got me:
Jesus said --
"Some people look... but they don’t really see.
And some hear.... but they don’t really listen or understand.”
Assuming our ears work, we can hear.
Sounds so simple!
Assuming our ears work,
the mechanics are such that we convert
the changes in waves travelling through the air into
auditory impulses from our nerve endings into
actual sound!
The mechanics of hearing...
Hammer & Anvil
and ear drums,
etc. etc.
The mechanics of hearing... if you really look at it.... that's a miracle in its own right!
Assuming the mechanics are there...
still doesn't assume we can actually listen!

How many times have we missed the life-lessons the universe is trying to teach us ----
....because we didn't

to notice!
Back when I did full time prison ministry
how many times I heard women inmates in particular say things like,
"Why do I keep falling for the same kind of guy?"
Maybe there's "words" we're just not ready to "hear" at the moment...
....so we ignore them.
But those "words" have a way of coming back up in our lives...
...over and over....
...and over and over...
again
until we're ready
to face them
and finally listen.
