What's So Amazing About Grace?
Do you personally know anyone who ever received a lump of coal for Christmas because he had been a very, very bad boy?
Do you personally know anyone who ever received a pony for Christmas because she had been a very, very good girl?
Do you really think Santa makes a list and checks it twice, trying to find out who’s naughty and nice?
Or do you think people receive Christmas presents because of who they are, and not because of what they have done?
Then, do you think God is “scroogier” than Santa?
Do you think that at communion on Sunday, that the righteous and the holy are given big chunks of bread, while the sinners and the weak-willed have to settle for crumbs?
Or do you think that perhaps grace Is given freely to all, without regard to merit?
When I started attending Abiding Savior about 18 months ago, one of the things I found attractive was the schedule. I could go to Fairland Aquatic Center when it opened at 8:00 am, swim for an hour, shower and change clothes, eat breakfast, and attend the 10:30 service. The thought of an Adult Discussion Group did not appeal to me at all. I had attended “Sunday School” and “Bible Studies” in the past and generally found them to be incredibly sappy – along the lines of “Philosophy is the study of Questions that cannot be Answered, while Religion is the study of Answers that cannot be Questioned.” Doh! Then one Sunday – probably the pool was closed for a swim meet and I could not go swimming so I had some time to kill – I went to an ASLC Discussion Group and found it was not nearly as bland as I thought it would be.
Do you have any thoughts, any opinions, any questions about grace? About forgiveness? You don’t have to prepare for the Discussion Group. There is no required reading. Generally we listen to a CD of Phillip Yancey reading a part of his book “What's So Amazing About Grace?”, and then discuss whatever.
So if you have time to kill Sunday morning – if your pool is closed for a swim meet – would you consider joining us about 9:15ish so that we can hear what you have to say about “What's So Amazing About Grace?”
