Lenten Meditation for Fri March 11

Simplicity has attracted me for a long time; the simplicity of order, of few motions, of simple words, of quietness. I work in a world where I am paid to speak... for some people what I say is too much, for others it's not enough. There is no happy medium. Some want you to explain more, again, again, more. Others say -enough.

I have had enough myself some days!

So, I take refuge in simplicity, as a wandering, seeking soul takes refuge in the Dharma.

The discipline of simplicity -

So, if I try poetry, the simplicity of Haiku seems to hold most promise. How can you say what you want to say in as few syllables (not words) as possible. As you count 'em... make 'em count. (Sort of like your breathes - you only have so many, make 'em count, right?!)

The perfect moment

Rests between adjacent breathes

Hiding in full view

My father still breathes

I mourn his loss day by day

His mind slowly dies

I chose a path once

Walking I found another

Has it chosen me?

Grasping at stillness

Cannot be done – yet why grasp

Wasted energy – just be

Join me... enter this discipline of simplicity and see what comes out.

In response to the 2nd poem:

Words upon the page
they imprint upon my mind
Tears form in my eyes.

This is a beautiful exercise! Forced to choose carefully, every word DOES count.
